my setup is a bit different than Feline's, so I keep everything on the backer roll as it's the top roll that acts as the tensioner, and if you rolled the batting and backing on the top roll, the extra thickness would cause the quilt to be way lower in the front than the back. I have an HQ.

So it does make it easier for me to roll back and forth. However I've also found that many times it's just as easy for me to switch thread. I may roll forward and back a bit if I have blocks I'm doing and want to center the block.

I did one quilt with several colors of thread and I only rolled forward and back just enough to center blocks and changed thread often. I also float my tops so as long as I didn't roll back far enough that the top was going to tuck into the backer roll, it worked fine.

I've seen quilts done with 2 threads, the black would show up on the colored parts and the colored thread would show up on the black sections. I'd use a larger needle if you try this. The quilt I saw was using a metallic thread with a regular quilting thread. It was awesome. Have yet to try it myself but its on my bucket list.

I got it off the long arm! Decided to use the variegated thread in the bobbin for the whole quilt and changed between black and variegated on each pass. Sent the picture to my daughter who loves it so that's all that matters :-)
