How do you calculate yardage needed for backing?

There are different ways I have used.
1. Go to your LQS with your top and ask them.
2. Pencil and paper (you need to decide on your method of quilting first.)
3. Moda has a sheet out there you can print explaining the most efficient way to piece a back.
I have heard there's an ap, but I've never used it.
