How do you do overall quilting on applique quilts?

I've been eying that pattern for a baby quilt too. I'd do the straight lines close together, but start and stop at the sides of the words (I know, who likes to start and stop, but...). I'd quilt the lines parallel to the bottom rather than the side, but either would look good.
