Had a friend ask me tonight how to enlarge a pattern from a wall hanging to a queen size. I have never done it and have no idea. She wants to know how to figure the additional amount of each fabric to buy. Is there a rule of thumb? I told her I'd ask all of you, since I think you have an answer for every question. Thanks for any help you can give us.

When I am figuring fabric, I start out with how much goes into one block. Say it calls for a piece to be 2 by 6 inches. That will be 12 square inches. If there are 4 of those pieces in one block and you are making 12 blocks that will be 576 square inches. So, to figure how much of that one fabric to buy, I divide 576 by 36 inches. It will take 16 inches, or get a half yard. Hope this helps you. I take a long time to figure how much fabric I need in projects, but it feels good to know that I am buying the right amount.

You might ask someone to try putting it in the EQ6 program to figure it out. Wallhanging to queen size is quite a jump. If it's blocks, it wouldn't be too hard. A queen size is around 85"x92", so you could figure out how many blocks to do and how wide to make the borders. Good luck!!

I had to enlarge a full size to a queen size, and my quilt was in 16 inch blocks (Each block was quilted in itself). I just laid the top on the bed and figured out how many more rows of blocks I would need and went from there.
I also bought a yard to 2 yards extra of each color to make sure. If I have any left, I will make pillows, dresser scarf, etc., Good luck!

Do you have a picture or name of the pattern? I think you'd probably get a lot more ideas if you do!

Another thing to consider when going from a wall hanging to a queen size is do you want to enlarge the actual blocks themselves first?
