I've had good luck with full-strength dishwashing detergent (doesn't have to be Dawn) put directly on the oil smear. You might let it sit for a few hours before laundering it.

Good luck, and let us know how it comes out!

corstarch...do NOT rub..but BLOT....lay a paper towel over the cornstarch so it can leach the oil into the paper..and NOT down into the quilt fabric....

    OY....

I just want to let you all know, I wanted to try the corn starch, lots of people mention cornstarch, but I didn't have any, but I did have baby powder which I used to use when grease splatterd on me when frying foods. Some mentioned talc powder too and I didn't have any talc, so I got out the baby powder and sprinkled it pretty good. My hubby and I went to town and got us a milkshake. When we got back, I checked, wiping off the powder and no oil spot. I couldn't even find the exact spot. Yaaaaahhh!!! Thank you all for your help.

Ya'll wanted me to let you know if any of these suggestions worked and it did. Powder is powder, right? By the way, the quilt is one that I made for my Aunt Ruby. I am giving it to her because she is the only one left of my dads siblings. My dad and her were always very close. Dad has passed, though my Aunt keeps him close to my heart. Seeing her is seeing him.

So happy that worked for you, here in Australia we call baby powder talcum powder so we were on the same wavelength all the time. I was actually a bit nervous for you when I saw the photos, the quilt is very beautiful by the way, and I'm glad it did the trick.

I use Dawn, diluted a little, to get most oil stains out. Let it air dry, no dryer or it will set the stain. Good luck

That's right! and Oldswimmer, good suggestion to mention let it air dry and not put in dryer because that makes the oil stain set in. thanks!

So glad you were able to get the oil out. Did you ever notice that the oil always drops on white, never on a dark piece of fabric. :)
