    Get a round decorative curtain rod of the appropriate size, and run it through the back instead of a dowel. The rod should come with the hardware to hang the rod on, if not, you can buy that separately. It will look nicer hanging this way instead of hanging with a dowel.

    if you put nails or screws into the wall I always cut my dowel or what ever used a bit longer than the sleeve but not wider than the quilt. then just sit the dowel on the nails. if it's a wall hanging push pins can be used.
