How do you know when to quit sewing for the day?????

When sewing at home I quit every two hours and take my dog out for a walk. We walk 2 miles if it isn't raining. Sometimes we get in a 8 mile walk if I sew all day. It takes me about 40 min. with the dog for two miles. She stops a lot. LOL. I feel renewed after each one. I count my computer time as sewing time. I go to a lot of workshops and sew days every month and I never get tired sewing there. Too much to walk around and see what others are working on, eating, talking and laughing. I don't cook breakfast or lunch and we eat a salad for dinner with whatever DH grills.

When I start making dumb mistakes OR when I start getting grumpy and the creative process becomes a battle of my will.
As for the dumb mistakes, it usually goes something like this: "Hm, I should really not do this because [statement of a bad thing that could happen] BUT I WILL BE CAREFUL.....and 9 times out of 10, I do "it" and the bad thing happens. Once I just needed to trim a little edge piece and cut right into a bunch of finished squares that happened to lie underneath. Most of the time I end up sewing the wrong sides/pieces together.
A tired mind also doesn't think creatively. Why did you want to use that particular fabric in the first place and what makes it inappropriate? Can you add a neutral border to make it work? I hate to throw in the towel before I tried all options.

Yes I'd say it was time to take a break! When the joy becomes frustration I set mine aside to let my subconscious think about it and either go to bed or do something else. I usually have several things going at once. I crochet, quilt, knit and if I'm really aggravated I make bread. Pounding the bread dough makes me feel better and I have adifferent perspective when I go back to it.

My first answer is when I look at the clock and it is 4:00 A. M.!!
I have had the same issues you and others have discussed. It is best to just turn everything off and walk out. The seam ripper with take care of the _____ tomorrow!

When I find that one section of the top is approx 1 1/2 inches shorter than the piece it is supposed to be joined with! Could not figure out how to stretch it so the pieces did not pucker. Ripped it out the next day, steamed it and left it to sit!
In the middle of the next night, I awoke from dreaming about strip quilts (yeah, yeah, I know!) to come up with a "Fix" - at least in my mind! We'll see!
Best wishes for a solution for your outer border!

I quit when my back hurts or when I'm just plain tired! Sometimes I find it better to put something aside and change projects if I start having lot of problems. May take a bit longer to complete, but it usually works out much better!
