I googled for a masculine quilt and this returned (with others). I have layer cakes, could I use them for this? Like cut each layer cake into four 5" blocks and then do the sashing?? You think its 3/4" sashing?

The sashing is quite narrow. I would guess that with 4.5" finished blocks (layercake cut in 4 & seamed) that you would probably be looking at 1/2" finished (1" cut) to get the proportions in the photo. However, you aren't going to be giving the photo with the finished quilt, so if you make it larger, no one will ever know!

I don't have an answer for the argyle quilt you linked to but I have saved the link to a pattern titled Batik Argyle Quilt Pattern made by a very prolific quilter, Debbie, in Alaska. It is really just a D4P with the fabric choices and placement making the argyle look happen. When I first saw it, I knew I wanted to make it for a person of the male persuasion someday. She uses 5" charm squares so maybe this would work for you ... if you liked it or not if you don't.

I think I would do a simple pieced quilt top and stitch store bought bias binding on top.

Thanks for the link Meyert. I have saved it for future reference too. There are so few manish quilt patterns out there. I think you could easily go with a 1 inch sashing (cut 1 1/2 inches) and it would look great.

The idea for sewing binding (or just use sashing strips) on top between the blocks would allow you to even do this as a quilt as you go.

The picture is a little fuzzy (or it could be my eyes) but it looks like they used ricrack sewn on top of the squares. Or like Tartan said sew bias binding on top then you could use 10" (or what ever sized blocks.) to make them look pieced. Very cute pattern!
