Large square and 4 smaller is my preferred way. Here is a link to sizes, measurements, and a tutorial.

I am making a FG quilt and am making each patch from different fabric. I am using a ruler "companion angle" by Darlene Zimmerman. I cut just the triangle I need

... and you only need regular rulers than you've already got - I am a bit suspicious of 'methods' put out by 'experts' that then require buying specialist tools from them. :?

The fomula posted earlier is all you need to know. :-D http://www.patchpieces.com/sharingpatch.html[/quote]

You don't need the specialty rulers....they are nice and I have them. What you need is just a ruler with a quarter inch measure. Go to the quilt in a day website and under free stuff she has a video on how to do the FG unit. When it comes to trimming to size remember that the top of the unit, the point has a 1/4 seam allowance but the sides do not so trim even to the far edge of the goose. The bottom just gets squared off. You can do it with any square ruler as well. I do it all the time. I use a 1"x6" ruler if I am in a hurry. Just remember you large square is 1.5" larger than your small square. A nine inch + seven and a half inch for example. I have tried the "no waste method and the no math ruler and found them all way too confusing. Eleanor is dead easy for me.

EB's method is really very simple once you get the basics down pat. I did a table runner from Marsha McCloskey' Block Party (pg182) for a dear friend that required 48 scrappy geese. The size was NOT a common size (2.25" x 4.5"), they can be made for any size, scrappy or all the same. There is very little waste and they come out perfect as long as your lines drawn and stitching is acute. But it always comes down to what works BEST for an individual.
