I only do mine by hand because I can not be satisfied by my ability to sew straight enough to be happy with machine appliqué. I bring my thread up just behind the edge of the appliqué, then go down into the very edge, moving about 1/8”-1/4” to the next spot to come up. This way of stitching may have a name, but I do not know what it is. It is an invisible stitch on the front. I use a thread that blends into my appliqué piece. I have had to take one off because of color conflict, and it was not easy, because I take a second blind stitch about every tenth stitch.

Either a very narrow satinstitch with 60-wght cotton or (going for durability) turning under the edges with starch over a template and topstitching along the edge with either 40 cotton if I want it to show or 60.
