Mine are sorted by color and holidays and backings and backgrounds.
I keep fat quarters by color in small plastic containers that are the right size for folded and standing upright.

Mostly by color plus a few themes - christmas, cats, music, and backings and large yardages are separate.

Since I have hundreds of FQs, I sort by colour into plastic 28 Qt containers with lids from Sterilite which are 23-inches long by 16-inches wide by 6-inches deep. Perfect fit for folding FQs into squares and standing them on end. With the "large" fold on top, it is easy to see the patterns and compare the nuances of that colour when pulling fabrics for a new project. The containers stack nicely: each stack has a large, deep wheeled container on the bottom of the stack. Large cuts go into the bottom container.

Batiks are separate from regular cottons. I also keep Civil War reproduction, Christmas, Halloween, Laurel Birch, Kaffe Fassett, and African fabrics in their own bins. Cats have their own large container.

Current projects have their own container with fabrics, threads, and pattern (if there is one).

So do UFOs.

Did my mention my stash has taken over the upstairs ........

I love to sort and re-sort my fabrics. Sometimes I feel like Scrooge McDuck counting his piles of money. Anyway - at my most recent re-sorting I sorted by color, by intended use (i.e., I Spy fabrics, bindings or backings), seasonal, theme (i.e. Asian) and fabrics I'm collecting for a specific project. Any time I start a new project I get to sort all over again.

I don't sort my fabrics at all. I have them stacked vertically and they are wrapped on boards. My problem is the depth of my cupboards hold three rows of these boards. It isn't the best system since I can't really see the back 2 rows. I'm still trying to come up with a plan. A lot of my stash is fat quarters. I love fat quarters to make controlled scrappy quilts. I have 3 in progress right now for donations. Life is good.

Mine is sorted by size, color, type (cats, black and white, feedsack repros) and whether washed or unwashed.

Not the best or most efficient system - but I do get a fair amount of exercise when I'm digging through the stash.

I predominantly work and store by color. I have the plastic coated wire cubes in a closet and one color is in each cube. The largest pieces are on the bottom and the smaller on top (approximately ). Fabrics like hand dyed, 30's or batiks are stacked separately on a shelf. After trying many different sorting systems, I've stuck with this one for 11 years.

You're supposed to sort ? ? ? just kidding. I did manage to ruler fold all of mine. I put them into one of those tall bookcases (by colour). Then ran out of room, so, some of my fabrics are playing in boxes, some are just kind of hanging out in every room, or visiting in my closet, at least until I get my recently purchased bookcase together. Then I can get all my fabrics back together, so they won't feel left out and neglected. I also need to sort thru all my goodies that I purchased and stuck in a drawer someplace. There just never seems to be enough time.
