I am in the process of quilting a quilt for my daughter in crepe backed satin and am finding it needed 1/2 inch seams. I think that pattern would be easy to add more to the seams but other patterns I just can't figure out. If anyone knows a formula or site that gives good directions please post! I have some older patterns that have the finished size as the pattern and you add the size of seam you want to them but not all patterns do that. I personally like the 1/2 inch seams!

Cut each piece one inch larger then sew 1/2 " seam. That makes sense to me.

If you want to use a 1/2" inch seam when the pattern calls for 1/4", I think you would add 1/4" to all sides of the block. 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2.

For half square triangles just add 1/2 inch on the original square? Many pieces would work with by adding another 1/4 inch to all sides but other shapes are a problem. I will work on it. Thanks for all the help.

I'm confused. You say you're quilting a quilt, but then the rest of your question doesn't make sense?

It would help to know what the pattern is that you are using. Simple shapes will be super easy - ie squares and rectangles. - just add in the extra 1/2 inch. . But, if the directions call for a shape then cut multiple times , the easiest and safest way (imho) to do that would be to create a template out of paper or template material. You could cut the shape out of paper, make any diagonal cuts then redraw the shape bu adding a 1/4 inch to every side. That would give you an accurate sized block without math!!

It is that pesky Pythagoras Theory thing on those diagonal lines (the a^2 +b^2 = c^2) that will get you on those diagonal cuts - not as simple as add a half inch Here is a quick example Same 8" finished block one with 1/4" seam the other with 1/2" seam quickly shown in EQ Rotary Directions

If you get stumped - reach out - I would be happy to draw a block in EQ with the 1/2" seams for you

I don't like math so reasoned it out in my head doing simple math: it's a starting point. For hst with a 1/2" seam add 1 3/4 to the square size.to get the diagonal seam to be 1/2" The starting size square would be 1/2" larger for the 1/2" seam.. So the square should be 2 1/4" larger. I would sew a test piece and be surprised if it is right and start over if it was wrong. LOL
