My machine has a front loading bobbin and sits flush in a cabinet. There is a plexiglass "surround" that covers up the hole around the machine. I lift that up when I need to get to the bobbin area. This website has some good photos that show how the machine sits on a shelf, and also shows the plexiglass surround that covers the hold. Click on each picture to get a good closeup view:

If you have a top loading bobbin, the hole can be an exact match to your machine. With a front-loading bobbin you need a bigger hole and the plastic surround.

http://www.quiltedjoy.com/2011/09/ma...ine-table.html and http://www.ehow.com/how_7716176_make...lexiglass.html My Lowes cut the plexiglass for me when I made my own extension table. I actually took my machine and the piece of wood I cut out from the table with me and they did a perfect cut.

I've searched online but don't even know what to call it. Thought one of you might. Thanks!
Elenore Burns has instructions on her website on how to make a sewing table from an farm table. I would it could be used from what you describe
