Hi... I'm making a mini-quilt for my friend's birthday, and I currently only have low-loft batting. I'm staying at my grandma's, and my grandpa is using his car on a road trip, so we can't pick up any other batting. However I would like the mini-quilt to be a little fluffier... My grandma has stuffing, and I might have enough batting to layer it (Does that work?) Thank you for your help!

Quilt batt is made in a sheet so that when washed, it doesn’t bunch up between the quilting. Laying stuffing out in a over lapping layer would only work if you machine quilted it very closely which would defeat the fluffy factor. If you are machine quilting, just use 2 layers of the batting instead of adding stuffing.

do you have enough batt to use two layers? An option lots of quilters are doing now to achieve the look they want, combining cotton with wool, poly with mixes... why not?? Good luck with your project, and welcome to the board!

Two layers of batting will make it heavier so consider that too.

Agree with the others.

Less quilting will help to keep the fluff.
More quilting tightens things up and the quilt will be more stiff and flat, not poofy!

Will your mini-quilt for your friend be hung on the wall or used as a lap quilt? The stuffing will not work for a quilt that will be washed unless you quilted very closely together and then it would not be puffy. If you have enough batting to put 2 layers, that would work. If you only have enough batt for 1 layer, ask your Grandmother if she has an old blanket you can use to add another layer of thickness. Best of luck to you on your project.

If it is various areas that you are trying to make fluffy and not the entire quilt you might what to try a Trapunto technique to make various areas stand out. You would be able to use a smaller amount of your batting for this since it is a smaller quilt.
