there is a tool you can buy on line, none of the stores seem to carry it, to keep your mats in good condition.
It's called a Mat Smoother, by Tri-sharp. I use it after regular cutting and it keeps my mat smooth!

I have four plus my new fip one, press on one side and cut on the other. Just bought a new huge one, self healing, as my DH and I destroyed one cutting coroplast boards on it. Also picked up a rotary one which I think I'll really like. The baby one, like 6 x 8 I picked up at the quilting expo and it's great for those little jobs.

    Lots,

    2 - 36x36
    2 - 6x18
    3 - 6x12 I think
    1 - 8x8 I think this one was a freebie from a show
    1 - 36x48
At one point I have used all of these.
