Yes, I started sewing long before quilting. I even sewed my own wedding dress 26 years ago. But once I started quilting, I never looked back! I still sew things like quilted bags, stuffed toys, coasters. No more clothes making...too fussy.

I sew. I used to teach beginning sewing in the home ec dept. of a university while working on a master's degree in education.

That said, it seems like really nice clothes are so cheap at yard sales and thrift stores, that unless you need something special, you spend way more if you try to make normal "daily wear" clothing that it just isn't worth it.

i used to do a lot of clothes sewing & still make a lot of the unstructured jackets for work...

i also made most of the drapes in my house... sure wasted a lot of muslin making the patterns... but when you cut it back up, wash & press it... it goes in a quilt...

I've made dozens of dresses for myself, friends and family, including a wedding dress, and lots of curtains and aprons. I've made only a few things for grandchildren now in the apparel department, since quilting is my focus now. I think you'll enjoy the process of making a garment and then seeing it worn. It's nice to be able to customize a garment to your own tastes.

I seem to be able only to sew flat things like quilts, aprons, kitchen towels, etc. As soon as I start on clothing, it ends up looking like a rag.

A few months ago, I decided to take this class on sewing quilted vests. They had about five ladies wearing the teacher's vests and they all look adorable. The teacher said that everyone would be fitted with the pattern personally. No sleeves, easy to make, personally fitted, what could go wrong? Well, with my squat, chubby little body, even the teacher had trouble fitting me. It came out looking horrible and was a big waste of material that I will have to use in my scrap pile. It turned out that I was the only one in the class that didn't look good in her vest.

That is why I stay away from making clothing. Even the simplest of patterns come out like a rag. :oops:

I, too, sew sew, but not as much lately. Too many quilts I want to make:D I used to make almost all of my own clothes, as well as daughter's and son's, not as much for him, though. Boys clothes are harder. Have made lots of halloween costumes. Just last year my duaghter told me she was always so proud of her costumes and her friends were jealous because theirs were "store bought" and not as nice. I've also made curtains and home dec items. In fact, as soon as I finish the baby quilt I'm currently sewing, I need to make kitchen curtains and placemats, again. I made them once a long time ago, but have since had the kitchen remodeled and now want different ones.
"Sewing" is such a different process from quilting, sometimes it takes a bit for me to make the switch if I've been doing a lot of one or the other. Good for the brain, I guess.

I also sew. Alot of pj bottoms and dreses /skirt and of course scrub tops.

Have sewn for years...clothing, boat tops, upholstery, drapery etc. But just recently started quilting.
