I have 3 - all given to me. My mother sews and knows her old machines. When people pick up on this, they offer her some old machine in their garage. My mom has about 40 Singers!

I currently have two machines.. one vintage.. one more modern.. each has their unique special features..My vintage is a cabinet mounted with a knee control for speed... love the knee control! The newer machine has all the great feet that I have an addiction for special feet! I could not part with either machine.

Too many and need more such as a LA and a 201 for a start. Only problem is I can not buy another house so I would have room for these and more.

I don't understand not having a back up machine if you love to sew.

2-a Pfaff 2044 for piecing and a recently purchased a Singer 15-91 Centennial(circa 1951) for SITD, to learn FMQ, and for working with denim. My Pfaff can and has worked with denim just would rather baby it as long as i have the Singer.
I crave something with a large throat.
My DH has 6 sets of golf clubs. Just sayin'...

my friends will tell you that i do brag about a few of the machines' features from time to time. but i don't brag about having them. junkies rarely want to admit it.
no point in complaining about how many i have. i either chose to buy them or accepted them as gifts when offered.
it's good [for me] to occasionally inventory. it reminds me to keep an eye out for opportunities to gift some of them away to friends who are just learning to sew.
none of my machines cost enough to qualify as "one uppers." (but a couple did cost enough to make me sweat when i signed the sales slip.)
i'm usually hungry, but not for machines. i don't know of any made from chocolate.

i would be just plain nuts with or without multiple machines.

Right now the main one is the Diamond ,then FW, 301A, 401, 99, Bernina recorder730, Pfaff 360, Vicking plus 1, Lilly, then 2 surgers Juki 644D, and Elna 454. Inventorying! OH no forgot the Treadle It was made in 1856 to 1886 according to Northland Sewing. Yes they all work!.

You can make quilts with the ones you have. It is just easier to make them on a machine that has a wide throat. To answer you question: one straight stitcher, one sewing machine, a serger and an embellisher - enough for me at the moment as I discovered that the embroidery machines have to be constantly updated in order to be viable.
