For years I used an old white cotton towel that I had cut into several pieces and zigzagged the edges. Each piece had a particular color that I washed it with, and I would periodically bleach them. When we moved 2 years ago, DD threw out my "rags". I have tried several towels since but they don't seem to work as well.

I haven't used them as I'm in the pre-washer camp
but some years ago when I did a lot of hand dying my own fabrics one of the pre-dying tasks was rinsing the fabric in the washing soda and hanging it to dry...because it helped get good penetration of the dye itself in the next step. I don't remember the ratio to water or if there was another ingredient, but I'm sure google would supply it.
