Default How much 108" yardage for five yards 44"

Okay, I need someone good with map to help me out here...

I have a pattern that calls for 5 yards of 44" wide fabric, but I want to use 108" wide backing fabric.
I'm probably too tired (or getting too old), but I'm having trouble getting my head around how to figure out how much yardage of the 108" I need to buy.

Certainly someone out there can help me, please??

    Thanks!

5 yards x (44"/108") = 2.04 yards of backing fabric, or very slightly over 2 yards.

Depending on the cutting pattern, 2 yards might be enough, but I would probably get 2 1/4 yards, just to be safe.

    Good luck!

PS: I just checked out your profile; your quilt inspectors are fabulous!

I would measure the length of the quilt and buy that amount. Yes there will be some left on the side because your quilt may say to cut the 5 yards in half and sew them together length wise. That would be about 90" wide by 90" long.

So you would need 2 1/2 yards. But you better go with someone who has quilted for a long time.

I usually buy enough to cover the smallest measurement of the quilt I am backing. Add in 8" if you are having it longarmed. For example say a quilt is 75" x 85". I would buy 2.25 yards if it were being longarmed. You would have a piece 80" x 20" left. But the idea of using the large backing is to not have to piece the backing. ;o) (If it matched, you could use it for binding)

Thank you, ladies... you make it so simple... i think i'm having senior moments. And yes, my dear quilt inspectors... I lost one over the holidays. I'm still painfully sad about it... he was only 3...

So sorry for your loss. It will take a while to recover from the loss of one of your fur kids.
I was going to say that depending on the size of the pieces you're cutting from the wide fabric, you can't count it requiring less than 2.5 yd
