Default How much fabric do I

need to make a queen size quilt ( 90X108 ) using 3 different colors of 2 1/2 inch strips? I just need this information for the top as I am still undecided about the borders and binding.

Thank you in advance for your help.

It depends on the blocks you are making. I would say to make up one and multiply that by how many blocks make up your quilt.

At this time I do not plan to use any blocks. The quilt top will be made using 3 different colors of 2 1/2 strips.

Like a jelly roll race? Or are you thinking of sewing the 3 strips together into a strip set and cutting that down like in a Rail Fence quilt?

Thanks for asking. It will be like a jelly roll race except I will only use 3 colors of fabric.

By my calculations you will need approximately 8 1/2 yards of fabric. That is assuming you will be cutting your own strips. Because I have no idea what ratio of each of the 3 you plan on using I can't say further but if this were me, I would play it safe and buy 3 yards of each of the 3 fabrics. You will then have some left over to make the binding and possibly even some stash. I also assumed a width of only 40" as these days it ranges from 40 to 44 wide fabric.
Disclaimer: I don't have EQ so I just did some quick and dirty calculations on the calculator. I also assumed you were running your strips across the 90" width and not lengthwise. All of these things can affect my quick and dirty estimates.

My calculations agree with FF above. 8.5 yds with straight seams, more if seams joininf each other are diagonal. I would buy 3 yds of each.

There are some charts available (like on Missouri Star) that tell how many jelly rolls you need for various size of quilts. They usually have 40-42 strips. Just divide those by 3 since you only want 3 colors. If you are cutting your own strips the charts will tell you how many you can get out of a yard (are you looking to use them as wof or cutting them length of quilt). We really need more information re your idea/vision for the quilt to be more helpful -- like dimensions you plan to make, etc.
