Apparently not enough since I keep going back and buying!!!! I also usually try to think of how I would use it, back/border/sashing/background. Unless you are doing a 2 color quilt that is usually where you really need yardage.

I buy a lot of bolts of basic colors and prints. I buy fat quarter towers of new fabric lines. I buy lots of pre cuts and quilt kits. I like sharing my fabric too so I share a lot of it with guild members. I tend to use up more of the fabric on the bolt then just cut yardage. Odd but true.

I am such a scrappy girl. I love quilts with lots of different fabrics. I consider my stash to be my palette. I love being able to pull fabrics from my stash for a quilt. I've been collecting seriously for over twenty years. That being said I usually buy at least a half yard, a yard if I really love it. A fat quarter is not enough. I buy borders and backing later specifically for that quilt. I don't feel guilty about my stash at all I don't drink smoke or play bingo, or buy expensive shoes! My stash is joyful!!! Lol

I pick up pretty fat quarters & 1-2 yards of fabric off the bolt. If I really like it I buy 3 yards. That being said, I often have to make a separate trip for backings once I know the size. I don't have a lot of space for a big stash & I make mostly controlled scrappy quilts, so I can do a lot with less.

I buy 3 yards. The only exception is cream and white. In those colors,I buy a bolt at a time.
