this has been very helpful for me. I do a lot of applique so have been buying lots of fat quartes for color, but am really starting to do table runners and wall hangings and am working on my very first big girl quilt and was shocked at how much fabric i needed so I have resolved to buy more yardage through the help of this thread.

I usually buy 2 yards, but if it's a neutral or something I really like and it's also on sale, I buy what's on the bolt.

Glad this question came up. From the 24th to 27th I'll be in Lancaster, PA for the quilt show and fabric shopping. My sister is a new quilter and asked me to pick up some fabrics for her. It's difficult to buy for someone else when they don't have specific pattern, fabrics and yardage in mind, but after reading the responses I'm buying 3 yards per fabric. May in Jersey

3 yards unles it is on sale and then I have been known to buy what is left on the bolt especially if it is talking to me.

Depends on whether or not my huband is with me! ROFL Believe it or not I spend more when he is with me then when he stays home!!!!

Ok, but i have learned that if I don't have a pattern in mind and the fabric is calling to me, I buy at least 3 yards more if I can afford it and I also try to get 2 or 3 others that coordinate with it (about 1 to 3 yards of each IF i can afford it)

If it's on sale.... LOOK OUT! :P

And I love fat quarters too. Oh who am I kidding! I LOVE FABRIC!!!

I'll buy a yard if I am REALLY in love with it and can afford it. Mostly I get quarter or half yards.

If I like it, I buy a yard, maybe a yard & half. If I love it I buy 2 yards, if I can't live without it 3 yds. If is a great price, I double this.
