I certainly would ask at a local quilt shop, or fabric shop if there is not a dedicated quilt shop. Churches are a good place to start asking for references.

I know of someone that moved to Chambersberg, PA and she is a great quilter. Are you near by?

Reflect on most classes are about $35.-$45 for 3-4 hours of just one item of instruction.

whoever you interview ask them to please bring with them something that they have made, whether it's sewing or quilting or both. this gives you an idea of what you're buying in terms of experience.

Is there a quilt guild available where you are? If so, there is a wealth of information there too and quilters love to teach and help other quilters, just like here.

Check your local public library. Mine has tons of books on quilting which might be helpful. Look for the ones for beginners. Most helpful to me when I started a little over 2 years ago was a class for beginners at my local quilt shop. The drawback was that I had to buy the book, all tools and fabric from that shop as well as pay the fee for the class. However, I learned such good basics that I think it was worth it, and I have a large throw sampler quilt to show for it. Also, see if there's a quilt guild in your area. Someone in that group might be willing to help you simply for the love of quilting. Someone else mentioned churches--mine has a prayer quilt ministry where one can learn some basics at no charge and do a good deed at the same time. Finally, buy the best fabric and thread you can afford and get a 1/4 inch foot for your machine. I hunt for quilt shop sales as much as possible, so I pay only $4 to $6 per yard for really good fabric. Good luck! You will get hooked.

good idea. some guilds invite new people to visit. you can decide whether or not you want to join and if they will teach you, many guilds are very accommodating . (let's face it: some aren't :  )

geez- I'd love a quilting buddy. If I found someone to sew with, I wouldn't charge anything. but I'm not near anyone so I guess I'll quilt alone. :(
