What look are you going for? How soft do you want the quilt to feel when finished? Decide this, and then pick a batting to match.
Different batting has different quilting requirements :D:D:D

well, I am of the "whatever makes you happy", school of thought, but there are books that teach you how to 'balance' out the quilting in your blocks, and if you look at the pictures you really can see a difference...I mean, I can understand why the author is saying don't quilt heavy in one area and then go lightly in another.
I have even heard that the wrong amount of quilting...off balanced quilting, I guess it would be called...can make your quilt pucker.
Geesh, just when I think I'm getting a handle on some of this stuff, I learn another thing to fuss over, lol!
I have to do what makes me happy. I'm never going to win any contests! don't care either, lol

I would say whatever makes you happy. I don't like a lot in mine so I use Warm and Natural and can have more space between the quilting. My kids like it that way too.

After I got my longarm; my mother inlaw (bless her soul)never wanted me to be without a quilt to do so she'd bring me a quilt not quite understanding the concept of how I charged would tell me "OH, just give me $20.00 worth." some times would be a baby quilt for a new arrival or next time maybe a queen size quilt: point is do what you love to do for the ones you love.

your batting can dictate the amount, if you are using warm and natural that can be quilted every 10" apart, try that, try quilting the recommendations on the packaging then you can really get a feel for different amounts and what you really like there is everything available from every 2" to every 10-12" ; try it all. find some big, open designs to try, and experiment a little bit.

You are your own designer so whatever you like is the way it should be. That's what is so great about our craft.

I hand quilt so I go lightly on those that are not real special to me. If it's for my family, I take a little extra care and add more decorative designs.

I prefer about 2" apart. I like the look of the heavily quilted quilts but it seems like it wouldn't be as flexible.

I was taught that there should be quilt stitches every 3 inches.
