I bear repeating myself but I prewash everything especially after what I've seen customers (who perspire heavily) do to the fabric then walk away. I've seen parents use fabric to wipe their kids dirty snotty faces. So yes, I prewash. I also can't tolerate the smell for long. It goes straight to my washer in hot water. I am careful how I pick up the fabric also when in the store. Many hands have touched the fabric.

I also love the look of a finished quilt before washing....but....washing changes the look of a quilt considerably and some may feel cheated or feel that they have done something wrong when their quilt comes out all crinkly after the first wash....just something to consider. My quilts all get washed before giving to recipient....they are all marked up from quilting patterns (washable markers), dirty from the oils on my hands, dirty from various times it has fallen to the floor....they really need a bath!

I know people gift unwashed quilts all the time, but sort of assumed handcrafted functional quilts that are for sale have all been washed at least once as complete quilts. Seems pretty risky not to, imho.

I am curious about this as even store bought quilts do not appear to have been washed as the lay of the quilt would be altered somewhat.

May I ask why the shrinkage amount is something you need to know in advance?
If I sell any I want to be honest regarding some shrinkage . I know 100% cotton will do somewhat. Mine go directly to plastic storage container after sewing so do not get touched or dirtied at all.

I prefer the new crisp look, also, which is why I prewash. If someone gets a quilt (with a nice crisp look) from you and the fabrics have not been prewashed, then when they wash it, and it shrinks to a crinkly look, they might not be happy with the resulting look. Just something to think about.

I decided to wash a couple of Moda 5 inch squares then let them air dry and measured against the same size cardboard square they came with. They both lost about 1/4 inch on one side only. Nor was there much wrinkling. I think a lot depends on the fabric manufacturer. I washed an Andover batik backing fabric to lesson the stiff deal and it stayed exactly the same after washing.
