OK...I have to admit that I have tubs and tubs of fabric...little peices, medium peices and large peices...

I see all these pics on here of these beautifully created sewing rooms and the stash fabrics are neatly folded, appearing to be uniform in size...and I'm wondering what is the ideal yardage to purchase when working on building your stash. I typically buy only a yard at a time (especially if it's expensive), but I find myself searching for more of the same kind of fabric from time to time to work on a project.

So, when you purchase fabrics for your stash, typically how much yardage do you purchase?

    Thanks guys =)

some people build their stash with nothing but fq's and charm packs; some people buy 2 yards of everything...it all depends on you. what kind of quilter are you? do you do alot of pre-cut's quilting? do you do alot of turning twenty types with fq's? do you make big blocks? it is a personal thing what you work with and everyone is different.
for me, if i love it and think i will use alot of it i buy a lot of it. if i like it but do not know what i will ever do with it i may only buy a fq...if i'm working on something in particular and know what i need i buy at least an extra 1/2-1 yard just to be on the safe side and to add to my stash.

If I'm just 'gathering' fabric, I buy in 1/2-yard increments. If I have a loose Plan for the fabric (i.e., I know who it is for but don't have a pattern), then closer to 1-yard. And then, of course, there are those irresistible fat quarters & precuts. Except for flannel - I back all of my sofa & lap tops in flannel, so I buy 3-5 yards at a time.

The sky is the limit - I have a TON of fabric - but - do you think it will stop me from going to Batesville and buying more? GET REAL! There is ALWAYS something I NEED!--Marshalls - HERE I COME!

If it is a fabric that I like, I usually buy 2 yards. If it is something that I love, I buy 3 or more so that I am not searching for more later.

I nearly always buy an entire bolt. I mostly work with blenders, so it works out well.

I get tired of working with the same fabric so fat quarters are my style. I can afford lots of different fabric that way and never get bored. I like scrappy quilts the best!

I will buy 2-3 yards if I really like it, 3-4 if I love it, 5 yards if I have a plan in my head for it. IF it is on sale/clearance, and I really like it, I buy the rest of the bolt. Fat quarters & charm packs add splashes of color, so I pick them up every once in awhile too, but prefer Moda scrap bags.
