I have selections from my trash bag in the sewing area. I hand them on bushes low, so the birds will use them for nesting. I've found some squirrel nests with a few colors that I recognize with my opery glasses.

I make dog beds out of my really small scraps. I found the most ugly fabric at out thrift store, all 10 yards of it, for $1. I sewed it into many small pillowcases that fit the dogs crate. I just keep one of these by my cutting table and when it gets full, I sew it shut. This way I don't feel guilty when I throw away the dogs bed when it starts to look and smell bad.

I can't bear to throw out my scraps as I'm sewing so I save them and make them into new fabric that I make Bible bookcovers from. The tiniest pieces along with some slightly larger ones, some threads, maybe sequins, ribbons, etc are laid on a sheet of thin fabric like muslin (or sometimes I use prints to show thru) and then a piece of toile or sheer material placed on top of the assortment. I make sure to cover as much as possible and have a pleasant assortment. This is pinned and then free motion quilted to hold everything together. From this I cut my pattern for my Bible covers. This is my tutorial from my blog - http://peggymunday.blogspot.com/2010/07/scrappin.html
Here's some finished covers
