I would be tempted to do stitch in the ditch with black (or even invisible "smoke" ) thread first and then see what you've got.

IMO, I think the SitD will make the coloured areas stand out a bit, away from the black and will be enough for this quilt but you may even want to do more FMQ in the black areas afterwards, but I, personally, wouldn't FMQ in the coloured areas.

This is nice! What did you decide to do for the quilting?
The reason I'm here is that I have made something similar, and am SID on the black (DecoBob). However mine doesn't have black cross-pieces, and I am unsure about how the spacing requirement should be interpreted on long vertical stitching lines.

I just finished this quilt. I did SID quilting on the black smashing strips. Did not quilt the black vertical strips. Since I used Warm and Natural batting I could stitch 10” apart. I think it will be enough. Had a hard time doing the quilting using black thread on black fabric. Will post a picture later today.

Black on black is tough. If you set up a lamp to the side of your machine so the light is coming across your work area, that helps.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
