I have a beautiful vintage tablecloth and would like to make it into a lap quilt. Would you sew it onto a base of fabric and then use that as your quilt top? Not sure how to proceed here.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I have a few old table cloths with printed flowers from the fiftys. I plan on using them as quilt backs. I'll pick out the colors and make a top that coordinates with the table cloth. I don't want to cut the table cloths. Enjoy using yours and post it for all to enjoy!

That's a great idea; I have some of those as well. The one that I am thinking of is all white and has some cutwork and embroidery.

it depends on the table cloth- is it lacy? a foundation would be helpful-
is it thin? again- a foundation would be a good idea-

is it linen- fairly heavy - in good condition???then probably no foundation would be needed. I have cut up table linens and used them before- but have not used a whole table cloth...is it one that would make a wonderful 'whole cloth' quilt? boy- this just opens a whole new world :)
show us pictures as this one progresses.

I love vintage linens. The other day I found an old tablecloth in good shape but faded so I'm make hand towels out of it. (for drying dishes etc)
I also found a really cute whimsical square dishcloth but it's more the shape of a table topper so I'm going to quilt it and use as a topper. It's too cute to use in the kitchen. My DH loves to cook and makes a delicious mess! LOL
