I see Connecting Threads has their stash builders on sale, including fat quarters, so I'm wondering if I get some fat quarters, how can they be used? If I cut them into 1/2 square triangles and sewed them into squares for a scrappy quilt, how many fat quarters would it take to make a full size or queen size quilt?

Just wondering if fat quarters are useful or not.

Buying FQs gives you more variety :D
It is hard to say how many you will get out of a FQ or how many you will need, it all depends on the size of the pieces you are cutting out of them, and also the size of the finished quilt. (drop/overhang, up over the pillows, etc..)

Maybe check out Moda's bake shop to see their patterns :D:D:D

I'm working on a Dear Jane, so I've been picking up a lot of FQ's. I don't usually buy them, but the DJ requires a huge variety of small amounts of fabric. I'll eventually use the leftovers in appliques.

a turning 20 quilt is made out of 20 fat quarters- it makes a throw size quilt- i would think for a queen or larger you could easily need twice that- depending on the patterns chosen...
an (average) pieced quilt uses between 9 & 15 yards of fabric- for the top...i think when i figured out what i was putting into my quilts i averaged about 11 yards for my queen size quilts.---thats 44 fat quarters!
the thing about fat quarters is --- your longest piece is only going to be 18-20 inches---
i tend to make quilts with long borders/sashing strips- much larger pieces- so unless it's just a fabric i absolutely have to have- but don't want much of i will buy a fq---otherwise i stick to yardage- it just fits my needs better
