Thankyou! And thanks for the suggestion: I'd gone along the variegated thread track, as have other replies to my question, but using black is a thought - I was wondering how on earth I'd choose a variegated colour, given the number of different colours in the top.
This is another of my older UFOs - I think I made it 6 or 7 years ago.
