The photo was upside down and I didn't see at first that they are stockings! How cute!
If you want to do something really simple, maybe a checkerboard with a walking foot via following the lines of the squares. If you have any cute decorative stitches (asterisks, stars) on your sewing machine, you could explore using some of those and make straight lines with your walking foot. Perhaps echo around the stocking fringe.

How about outlining some Christmas trees and ornaments. I recently made a table runner that the fabric had black background and covered entirely with small Christmas trees in gold metallic thread. I put red and gold fabric on the back and made a large Christmas tree as the quilting. It was very simple quilting but effective. I found both fabrics at Jo Ann's. I love your stockings. Cute runner.

Stitch in the ditch for the stockings and then some pretty design in the border. I'm a hand quilter and there are a lot of border designs that would highlight the stockings. Cute runner. Thanks for sharing!

Very cute runner! I like to look at the Quilting Designs on the UrbanElementz website - under Seasonal-Christmas she has 268 designs. I like the doodle trees
Another idea: if you have an embroidery machine you could do some colorful embroidery on the top white section of each stocking? Or even use some decorative stitches?
Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be great! Be sure to update with a pic, please.
