Madquilter,
You're so right about the difference between the old Pfaffs and the new models. The older ones require a forklift to move them and I think they've got a different "feel" too.
I just helped my friend pack a Pfaff 230 for shipping to her DD, that silly machine weighed 45# before we packed it.

i have a viking designer one and i do love my machine; that being said, really wish i had spent a little more time trying out different machines before purchasing it...it was a major investment (cost more than my long-arm machine) if i had it to do over again i think i would be leaning more toward a Bernina...my mom has an industrial one that is something like 30 years old and still a wonderful machine! the stitches are beautiful. i have a friend who had a pfaff, after 20 years she decided to upgrade and buy a new one, and replaced it with a new pfaff, she is very happy because of the dual feed.
i think the bernina's cost a couple grand less than the vikings/pfaffs...is there a reason you are not considering a new bernina? of course customer service should also figure into the equation.

I understand that now Vikings are being manufactured in China--but what we didn't know before is that the computerized Vikings have been made there for several years--and they were still top of the line machines.
So, if my house were on fire, i would rescue my Viking!

I love my Sapphire 875 too!! I used to sell Husqvarna and Singers. I fell in love with the 870 and bought one, then traded up to the 875 when it came out.
I have a Pfaff 1222E that's about 35 years old; I bought it used about 4 years ago and that's what I was using for quilting until the Sapphire came home with me.

I have a Pfaff 2046 and a 2170. I got the 2170 because I wanted the embroidery also. I love both of these machines. I bot from a dealer in Valencia. The dealer has been wonderful about classes, questions and any help I need. I hope nothing changes .

(drumroll), $6000, plus tax. I'm sure they are more now, but the Bernina is closer to $10000.
