"My" Walmart is always careful when cutting, and I always let them know how much I appreciate that. I mean careful in a good way, not that they give me more than I pay for, but that they are always careful to cut the fabric correctly.
The LQS, on the other hand, has cut one length at the beginning of a cut and 3 - 4 inches shorter at the end of the cut - which is significant enough to make you come up short on fabric for a quilt.
I don't need to get more than I pay for, but I do want and need to get what I am paying for.

Cut a small piece of fabric - only 1/4 x 1 inch is big enough - hold it with tweezers in the flame -
If it has black smoke and/or leaves a crispy ash or sticky residue, it contains polyester, nylon, or dacron.
The residue stays HOT a lot longer than cotton or wool ash.
Cotton (and wool) burns with white smoke or no smoke, and leaves a soft ash that powders in ones fingers.
Wool has a "burn feather" smell.
Rayon is made of wood pulp - and that also burns with a soft powdery ash.
