Yup, I've done it. The trick is, you have to quick get the needle back through and out of the nail before the shock wears off - otherwise, it hurts even more to pull it through!

There's at least one more thread here on this quilting-related injury. Some people hit the bone - and that was really bad...

Ouch...I hope you feel better soon. I haven't done that (yet), but last week (when I really needed to get a quilt done) I jammed my right small finger (pinkie) in the koi pond filter I was cleaning and as I moved to pull it out the metal sliced all round the joint - bled like nobody's business and had to wear a plastic bag on my hand to keep the dressing dry. Two days after that I slammed my left hand in the sliding door.....mantra for the week "focus...focus"!

    Barbara,

Sorry to read that you sewed your finger. When is the last time that you had a TETNUS shot.
For me it is the rotary cutter. ER said - 4 stitches but my primary took out 7. We were laughing and talking a lot at the hospital. The Hindi Dr. did not know what a rotary cutter was.

Anyway that is how I thought you might need a shot.

Okay, now I have read the whole Boo-Boo thread. OUCH! Take a deep breath and sew a little slower.

I haven't sewed through the nail, but many years ago I sewed the through the edge of my fingers. Have done that more than once. When I was a teenager I stepped on a needle caught in the hall runner. The needle broke off in my foot. The shot to numb my foot and remove the needle hurt worse than the needle breaking. Pamper yourself and remember if this is the only dumb thing you do you'll be lucky.

Ouch! Sending some great basset drool your way! I haven't sewn my finger with the machine, but years ago I was hemming a skirt by hand. I jammed the needle down my middle finger next to the nail and skin. Didn't think much about it until the next day when I realized it was infected. After a round of antibiotics, I was fine.
