I've never done it myself but as a 10 year old, had to pull the needle out of my mother's finger.

   Yes, you are not alone. I've gone through the end of the finger and even a finger nail or two in my life. The not brightest thing I remember doing, back when dinos roamed the earth, was to get the thread take up lever caught in my overly long/fluffy bangs. I immediatly learned that you really don't have to be that close to the machine.

I've been sewing for 47 years and haven't sewed through my finger until last week. I was really tired and trying to get some samples done. I didn't go through my nail, just the soft part of my finger. My reaction was to pull my hand back and the needle broke off. I pulled it out, cleaned it up and told my husband I was done sewing for the night. Lesson learned, don't sew when tired. I always tell my students not to cut with their rotary cutters when tired, now I should tell them not to sew either.

I would have said EXACTLY the same thing.. I haven't done it yet.. but my DH would be upset and then mad that I had done something like that.. so, like I said.. I would have said the very same thing and hoped to get away with it!

If it hasn't already been said, please make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

Hope you heal quickly and without any complications.

Haven't sewed through mine yet, but I did drive a screw through my finger and nail. Took the whole side off of it. Yes, it sure did hurt. It was at work and I did it with an air gun.

Never done that, but have sliced off a peice of my left index finger with the rotary blade. Also dropped a rotary cutter on my foot and got a nasty gash on my insteo.
