I have done this when making HST and QST by a method that differs from the original quilt pattern instructions, to double check cutting and finished block sizes. I use a long basting stitch for when I "get" the correct finished size I can take it apart and mark my rulers for the correct line the cut from. Colored construction paper rocks!
