I work on a very part time basis at a LQS, too. You know the sign "Will work for food"? Well, I work for fabric!

Perhaps you can make samples for the shop at their expense, which will satisfy your "have to have" need and that way you will still get the paycheck.

No big deal, I got a job as a secretary, spent lots of time in the quilt shops anyway, life was good. Then in August, I got my teaching job back, yay. Less time to hand out in the quilt shops, but more money. On Weds, at one of the LQS, they do a bee from 12:30 to 3:30. On Weds, classes end at 1:35 so we can have our teacher professional development time. On days where it's personal time, I get to go hang out at the shop for about an hour or so. I went in today, hung out, talked to everyone. My friend works there (who actually got me the teaching job when she retired) and we usually chat when the store's slow. And since I feel weird being idly while she's working, I usually help folding fat quarters and such. So today, we're chatting and out of the blue, the owner says "hey, do you want to work here this summer?" and I said "yes. Huh?" and she explained that they were losing someone and with summer vacations, she was concerned about being shorthanded, so needed someone for the summer and then Saturdays when I go back to school. To which I said yes! She's going to sit down with me next week and we'll figure out a schedule and training times and whatnot, but OMG, I get to work at a quilt shop! I said to my friend, loudly, "I knew if I worked here enough, eventually I'd get hired!" So yay!!!!!!!! And the goal is to leave every other week with a paycheck, rather than having to pay them because of all the fabric I took :D
Good luck ... my first paycheck was $1.57. The quilt teacher said that was really good because she was going to have to pay the owner as her spending exceeded her teaching!

Hey, why not share the good luck and when a fabric is going cheap (Aaahhhmm, INEXPENSIVELY) you get a bunch and sell them here so we all can get a bargin or two. I myself are looking for a used alto quiltcut2.
