I have been leaving mine open but after reading this I'm going to try to close it up when I lay it down. Thanks for sharing so maybe you can save someone for doing the same thing you did.

mine has the handle that you squeeze to put the blade out but it also has this little button you push to lock it open....thatis where I mess up.

Oh gosh, yours was much worse than mine. No matter how careful I try to be, I still messed up one time when I was holding the ruler & ran the rotary cutter up the fabric right across the end of my L index finger. That thing bled for 3 days in spite of putting pressure on it. It was also numb for months since I obviously had hit a nerve. It's all better now but I sure learned a good lesson. Keep my fingers out of the way.
I'm now fussy about teaching my friends how to place their hands & to "crawl" their hand up the ruler as they cut instead of doing one long swipe. I'll never do that again. Something might stop me from quilting & I couldn't stand that. LOL

Throw away the cutter that locks open and get one that only opens when you grip the handle. It works great and is worth the safety it gives.

One of the ladies in my church quilting group told me that she took a class and they got yelled at if they left them open.

Here's my question...can the Olfa ergonomic cutter be flipped to make it "lefty" friendly? I use a Fiskars because the blade can go on either side. I try to push that little orange button every time I put it down! lol

I have a cutter that the blade comes out when you put pressure on it. I can't find a name on the handle. :(
It is blue with black padding on each side and can be used left or right. It has a switch for light and heavy fabric and a locked position. I tend to leave it open all the time since I don't see how it can cut me by accident.
