I knew this might happen.

I've done that! Argh.
I slowly turned the wheel until the needle came down to just above the foot and I could see which direction it needed to go. I then grabbed the shaft and gently pushed it back into place.
Uh, I've actually done that several times. Sigh.

Oh yes I took the presser foot off. I was trying to open the plate over the feed dogs but it won't unscrew. It could be that there's part of the needle in there. I tried a new needle and put it on slow speed and it seemed to be o.k. until I tried to thread it with the automatic threader which got jammed and broke another needle. I feel a little encouraged that it might not be a totally complicated repair.

I started breaking needles on the walking foot, but my Viking Rose still works. I think I just wore my walking foot out after 15 yrs. of use, so I replaced it. I always look for the small broke off piece when the needle breaks to make sure it does not get inside my machine.
I'm big on calling manufacturer's help 800 numbers. Have you tried that?

I have a Brother (some letters)9000, a rather inexpensive machine ($approx 200). I can program it to start with the needle in the middle position, straight stitch. I am sure the more expensive machines can also be programmed to do that.

I have done the same thing many times with my Brother -- but it has survived each time - I do have to turn it off and reset it each time. And, my 1/4" foot is the one for my machine. It's just that the #0 stitch is a left side straight stitch - and the center straight stitch is #1 - so unless I remember to change the stitch...
Hope you get it fixed!

It is also possible the machine got thrown out of timing when the impact happened. That will require a trip to the shop to fix. I did the same thing once with my Bernina. Luckily my dealer is a dream and they fixed it free under warrantee even thought it was my own blunder.
