Grrrrr- I m making a flannel rag quilt. with both sides the same pattern with batting in between. Each time I sew a square together, I am ending up with normal seams, not open seams. I have tried right sides facing out-still no fix. Since I really don't have a wrong side to sew together any ideas? I am tearing out my gray hair(s) one by one. Can't be this difficult, but as a beginner it seems impossible. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks

i am not sure i am understanding,

but here is what i do, the batting is smaller than the outside fabric.about 2 inches smaller..that will give you 1 inch on each side to "rag". can you post a picture?

How are you sewing them? I sew mine with an X across first and then sew them together. Here are some tutorials that might help:

I used this one for my first raq quilt.

This is one I used for a swap. Kids love it!

You will only have seams "out" on one side of the quilt. You sew the squares wrong sides together, using a 1/2" seam. All the seams should be on the front of the quilt.....hope this helps...

The way I understand it, you lay all 4 layers of the flannel on top of each other and then sew a generous seam allowance through those layers. If you use batting, the batting must be smaller than the squares and it will be captured when you sew the squares together. All 4 seam allowances will be on one side and you nip into the seam allowance to allow fraying.

    wrong sides together?
I always sew with wrong sides together so that the seams are on the front and that is what gets frayed, so that all the fraying is on top or the front.

I can't quite figure out what you are doing, so I searched on Youtube for a video that might help you:

There are other videos on Youtube also, if this isn't the technique you are using.
