I do this every time when I begin and after I've changed bobin just to be sure I don't have a problem on the quilt. I always use the same thread in the bobbin (or at least the same brand/weight) as I use on top. Hope this will help. I know it's terribly frustrating.

I take a single stitch away from my quilting line, then move over and start the actual motif. When I'm done working, I pull out that single stitch and bury the end in the sandwich. If there is a bird's nest,it will pull out, If not the tension of the starter stitch will keep you first real stitch tensioned properly.
