I need help
I have a pattern to make a carpenter star but it is only for a king size quilt. I want to make it a full size for my bed.
It has 16 squares across and 16 squares down. She used 7inch squares and finished at 6/1/2. What size squares should I start with? My brain is not working so good today. I have been trying to figure this out for 2 hours. Gave up
Thanks in advance

How big do you want it to be? The top of a full mattress is 54 X75, so if you want the star to be just the top of the mattress the closest options would be:
3.5" squares, finish at 3, star would be 48"
3.75" squares, finish at 3.25" would be a 52" star
4" squares, finish at 3.5, would be a 56" star.
3.5" squares, finish at 3, star would be 48"
3.75" squares, finish at 3.25" would be a 52" star
4" squares, finish at 3.5, would be a 56" star.

Do you have a grid type picture of the design? If so, count the # of squares across. Then multiply that number by the various possibilities of finished size squares, ie. if you use 4" squares it will be a finished size of 4x??, if you use 5" squares it will be 5x??, if you use 4-1/2" squares it will be 4.5x?? If your answer is a few inches short of the desired finished size then you can always add borders. On the one I Made for my DD I added a single border on the sides and triple borders on the ends.

This quilt measures 60x72" I am assuming you are only wanting the one star to cover the bed? Each unit is 6 1/2".

Measure the width and length of your bed. Decide how much hang you want on the sides and bottom. Divide the width and length by the size of a finished square to get the number of squares needed.

PaperPrincess is exactly right. Just for ease of cutting I like using 1/2" or 1" measurements. I'd go with the 4" cut size if I were doing it. Hmm. I have a Carpenter's Star that needs quilting. Guess I ought to get that done.
