I have a friend whos daughter was killed a few years back. She is not a quilter yet she took her daughters tee's and made a quilt for her own bed. She now wants to have it long arm quilted and has asked me for advice. I have never commissioned anything like this and don't know what to tell her. So my question is two fold:

1. Do you know of any good Long Arm quilters in Central Pa?
2. What advice do you have for the commission?

I am sorry, I do not use a long arm quilter. I am sorry that no one has replied to your post. There are some long arm quilters on this board who hopefully can answer your questions.

Sorry to hear of your friends loss. I love that she made a quilt out of her daughter's tees.
I don't know any quilters in your neck of the woods but would advise
good communication with whomever she does choose. Ask to see some of the quilters work, and tell them exactly what you'd like. If possible get it all in writing.

If she's intent on using a local LAer, there should be some LA quilter's in her area. She can check with a local quilting guild - they'd know who is there.

Most of us charge by the square inch. As long as there are none of those thick rubber designed t-shirts, I'd suggest an allover design. It would not detract from the t-shirts, and hold everything together well for a long lasting memento. It can be done through the mail with e-mail consultations with photos before sending the quilt. Funny thing....most of us quilt for people outside of our immediate area. Quilts are going all over the country as I write.

Please give her my condolences. I can't imagine loosing one of my kids.

Thanks Shelly. I think her reluctance to go outside the area is so she can have a face to face with the artist. This quilt has such a great emotional significance I don't think she would be comfortable sending it anywhere.

Her daughter and best friend were both killed in an auto accident picking up prom pictures. They were both in my daughters class.

I can't help answer your questions, but wanted to send {{{{HUGS}}}} I can understand that she would be nervous about sending the quilt anywhere. Maybe if she finds a long distance quilter that she likes she could ship it with tracking capabilites (Spelling) ? Just a thought. No parent should have to bury a child.
