Use some ironon black fusible interfacing & then use the black batting. Hopefullly it won't beard. Black or gray batting is usually polyester not cotton or a blend. You could also sew some black fabrice over these places. Good luck.

I would add fusible or replace---I did not on one I made and it had to be torn apart after a few months---easier now!

Just a shot in the dark - but how would it work if you used some heat and bond - like on the t-shirt backs for the t-shirt quilts - gives them more stability and less chance of getting "bulky" on the quilt later on... and in this instance it would firm up the fabric in question! or iron on pellon - something of that nature in stabilizers...

I had this same problem on a quilt with dark blue. When it was quilted, it didn't show. To be sure, I'd use black batting, and I know it exists.

When I use a quilt for a bed - i susually use a flannel on the back to keep them from slipping - but I agree with the black batting

I initially thought I would take the Black that is too think out and replace it. Then I read the other comments, and then I would make a choice.
Your mistake reminds me of a 3-block Sample Wall hanging I made a few years ago. I didn't realize that White for a border doesn't work well;they "forgot" to tell me at the quilt shop. I never liked it, so finally took it apart and used Navy Blue. Then to help me forget the work I went to to change it, I put a border of rick rack along the seam which joined the border to the wall hanging. It is very striking now, and I have had lots of compliments on it.
In the long run,I don't think it was as big an investment of time as if I "doctored it up." I would vote to take it apart and use your original idea with stronger fabric.

If it were me-- I would take it apart and replace the black fabric.. It is going to wear out faster than the others, and will have to be replaced sooner or later. it would be easier to do it sooner.


I agree with Purple Passion. I would replace the black fabric before going any further. It will definitely wear faster than the other fabrics and would present more hard to fix problems.

You could always tack another layer of black on the underside of the top. Just baste it in under the black only; your quilting will make it hold.
