    As a new quilter (have only made three) I found this article to be the most helpful. My borders were perfectly flat.

    On my machine, with a regular foot, the top fabric can be slightly "stretched" on top of the longer bottom fabric. Pin at least every six inches, with the excess eased along the entire length of the side.
