I also worked in a quilt shop and if some one whated a cut of fabric another cutomer was wanting, we always cut the person who selected the fabric first then the second one. The both had a chance to select the bolt off the shelf.

Yup. you gotta stand up and be noticed. Glad you took a stand and got what you wanted.

You were very lucky to think to get yours cut first. I will remember that if ever I am in the same situation. Thanks

I agree, posession is 9/10ths of the law. Many times I am buying end of bolt on sale and can't afford to let go of a yard or whatever.

Thanks for all the feedback. I didn't really feel all that selfish but this store has a reputation for rude clerks. I was raised to not "create a scene" rather than stand up for myself but as I've gotten older, I've learned the art of politely "creating a scene". Sometimes not so politely.

If we don't stand up for ourselves, nobody else will either.

I agree. If the bolt is in your hands or being held for you (some shops do have some type of method to show items are being held - i.e. fake rocks or beanbags), then it is first come, first served. I was at a quilt shop a few weeks ago and saw this lovely batik that another woman had in her pile. I kind of hovered until it was cut for her and then asked for it before it was put away. I wouldn't take it before she was done, especially since it was for my stash and she was shopping for a class.

I think what you did was well done. Hopefully the clerk learned something too.

Good Girl. She had the same chance to pick up the fabric as you did. You looked, found it and she didn't. I will remember what you said if it ever happens to me. Thanks for sharing. BrendaK

I would have suggested (demanded in a polite way) that the clerk/manager/store provide the missing fabric for me ... preferably at no charge ... from another store or manufacturer. Or provide me a gift certificate to make up for my loss.
