I did a faux chenille jacket. I did chenille pieces just big enough to cut my pattern pieces from. That's how I would do it with any other technique. You can also quilt each section individually before sewing the jacket together.

Most all my jackets started with a sweatshirt. Take it apart and sew patches or strips on it and sew it back together. Most of your LQS will have classes for them or you could maybe look it up on the net.

thermore batting is thin and drapes well. it started out being used in jackets.

Now that I've read everyone's ideas, I'm wondering if it would work to cut the jacket out of flannel, then sew the blocks on and trim then to the flannel size. I'd like to do one in strips- up and down of course, I'm no Twiggy- Hmmmmmmm, something to think about

I have made several quilted jackets. My favorite is the M2 jacket from The Quilted Closet. You make 5 "mini quilts", then cut your jacket pieces from them. Also, there are a number of quilt-as-you-go jacket patterns out now. Beware if the sizing though. I have found the sizes run small. I always make a size larger than I wear. Hope this helps.

NO don't cut out the flannel out first as when you sew the pieces of fabric to the flannel it may change the size and shape of the flannel. sew your pieces to the flannel first and then cut.

Basically what you're doing is making fabric. You make each section bigger than the pattern piece you need to cut and then cut your jacket pieces out. To make your fabric you make blocks and quilt to your batting and lining or do flip and sew on your batting and lining and then cut your jacket out of your made fabric.
