I cut small rectangles of white flannel and write the type of needle on it (ironing freezer paper to the fabric back makes it easier to write) Then I punch a hole in a corner of the fabric. Used but still sharp needles are stored on the fabric piece when not in use and when I'm using the needle I keep the flannel piece on my thread holder (I forgot what it's called!) on the machine using the hole I punched. Not only do I immediately know which needle is in the machine but I also keep my needles well organized. Really helpful especially if you use lots of different needles for various projects.
Hope this idea helps someone! Happy New Year!

Would you be willing to post a photo? Sounds like a great idea, but I need a visual!

I'd be happy to post a photo but alas! I don't know how. I tried holding a needle label against my computer screen and hitting "enter" but nothing happened (and that's my feeble attempt at humor for the day - maybe I should stick to sewing!)

What is it that you don't know how to do, reguarding posting pictures?
if you hit quick reply, you can't add them, if you reply on the thread you will see the "browse" and you click on that to bring up all your pictures, then you find the one you want..

Perhaps you don't have a camera that hooks up to the computer? If not, no worries. If you do though, it'd be nice to see a picture of your needle holder.
