Ideas for a "rainbow" quilt
#51
I did a rainbow quilt many years ago. I picked 6 fabrics that were colors of the rainbow. I cut them so that the 6 could fit a 6 1/2 block. I made a rail fence with the blocks.
I did this for the director and his wife for the show my son was in. They were doing the Wizard of Oz and I found a great fabric of Dorothy and the munchkins. It was too pretty to cut so I used that for the back.
Of course everyone knows Dorothy went over the rainbow to get to Munchkin land.

well, rainbows and rainbow colors were just that before 'gay pride' stole them.... and kids have always liked rainbows...
my bf made a rainbow 'gay pride' quilt for her son - that was an exercise in tears - using grandmother's fans and brights on kona black and it turned out fabulous ...

I made a rainbow quilt several years ago as a remembrance of the many rainbows the Lord has given me in times of troubles. I made it with solid roygbiv colors. It is a simple pattern from a book called weekend quilts. It is squares, maybe 5 in. sort of a pattern like a trip around the world but shaped in a bow. In the corners I appliqued doves with a leaf in the beak. In the border around the quilt I monogrammed Jesus Never Fails and God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds. Those are songs we sing.

I've had great success making rainbow quilts using Jane Hardy Miller's technique (http://www.amazon.com/French-Braid-Q.../dp/1571203265). Easy and easily expandable to whatever size you want.

I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this photo of a rainbow that was hanging in the Sea Life Center in Seward. I took a picture of the photo then put my Mother's poem she wrote concerning rainbows. I will try to get it on here so here goes.
If you can't enlarge it to see well enough, I can send it to you

My daughter belonged to the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, which is a girls group (11 to 21) sponsored by the Masons. Before she matured out, she was really into rainbows and rainbow colors. The girls made long cotton dresses for Grand Assembly (state meeting) every year. As long as the colors were primary, at one point in time or another any design was used. Some years the traditional rainbow was used. Other years, license plates, birds, jungle animals, bugs, you name it.... were used because the material available had all of the primary colors.
Bottom line... ask your friend's daughter to describe her "rainbow" quilt to you... is it the colors or the pattern or the picture/photo she likes the most?
That will give you a good idea about what direction you can take to make her really happy.
Best of sewing fun to you. Let us see what you come up with.
